Successful Habits:
Shattered Myths

Excerpt from the book "Built to Last" by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras

Myth: The most successful companies focus primarily on beating the competition.
Reality: Visionary companies focus primarily on beating themselves. Success and beating competitors comes to the visionary companies not so much as the end goal, but as a residual result of relentlessly asking the question "How can we improve ourselves to do better tomorrow than we did today?" And they have asked this question day in and day out - as a disciplined way of life - in some cases for over 150 years. No matter how much they achieve - no matter how far in front of their competitors they pull - they never think they've done enough.

Top 5 Tips for Setting Up Your Home-Based Work Place

By Janet Drez, A Perfect Solution

1. Have a designated work space
If at all possible, having an office with a door is the best scenario. It allows you to focus and shut out household distractions when you're working and to "clock out" when you're enjoying time with family, pets, and other parts of your life.

2. Purchase Supplies that Belong to the Business

Whether the tools of your business are pens, staplers, and post-it notes or paint tubes, brushes and a hot glue gun - purchase a set of supplies that will be used solely for business. You'll save yourself a lot of stress and time wasted when you can't seem to find anything to write with!

3. Invest in a Good Chair

You'll be spending a lot of time there, so spend the extra few dollars to have a chair that is ergonomically correct and fits your body and your type of work.

4. Have a Business Phone Line

A separate line allows you to separate business calls from personal calls, and also adds to your professional image and credibility.

5. Set Up a Usable Filing System

Before you know it, you'll be inundated with information, invoices, equipment manuals, customer records. You need a simple, usable way to file and manage your paperwork. Set it up right, right from the start and you'll save yourself a ton of time and headaches down the road.
